HSTA searching for core organizers; Apply now!
The Hawaii State Teachers Association seeks members who are trusted and respected among their colleagues to help lead the work of our association. The HSTA believes a strong union is one to which members want to belong and participate. Members are encouraged to apply to become an HSTA State Level Core Organizer.
Core Organizers will go out and build meaningful relationships with teacher members through face-to-face meetings and other methods of communication. Applications are due by Jan. 15, 2018. Core Organizers will participate in mandatory training and will be absent from work (on union release time) for training as well as organizing activities.

Free workshops on Hawaiian issues for teachers
Sign up now for a free upcoming spring workshop series aimed at better equipping teachers to teach about Hawaiian history, culture and politics. The Kupono series is organized by Halau Ku Mana, a public charter school on Oahu. The workshops will provide teachers more resources to teach about Hawaiian issues, historical and contemporary. While PD credit will not be given for these workshops, they will provide teachers important enrichment and historical perspectives that will help improve lessons in and out of the classroom. Look for Janus FAQs in your home mailbox soon
The HSTA is sending a two-page letter answering basic questions about the Janus Supreme Court case that's aimed at weakening unions to the home addresses of all HSTA members. The letter should arrive in your home mailboxes starting as soon as tomorrow and by the end of next week.

HSTA Institute schedules revealed; Come to learn about Janus, win prizes
Teacher Institute Day is more important than ever this year, since anti-union forces are trying to weaken us with the Janus Case before the Supreme Court. Learn how the case could have an effect on the power of the union and what you can do to keep HSTA strong! Institute is the single largest professional development day on the school calendar, covering a variety of topics – for professional and personal growth – and featuring noteworthy keynote speakers. As a professional day, it is a work day and teacher attendance is expected. Voting for state and chapter officers and delegates to the HSTA Convention and NEA RA will take place in the morning. Teachers attending Institute will be eligible to win iPads and other teacher tools!

Labor of Love effort focuses on Waianae Elementary
Teachers, come join members of other labor unions in January as the Labor of Love project targets Waianae Elementary. They're looking for between 250 and and 300 volunteers to spend the morning of Saturday, Jan. 20 working to improve the school, mainly by painting some of its facilities. Waianae Elementary has 100 percent enrollment in the Free and Reduced Lunch Program, so it's a school whose students could use a boost of help from the community. The Department of Education has dedicated $650,000 in Federal Title I and $350,000 in State general funds to support the first two years of Hawaii Innovation Fund Grants, aimed at promoting, implementing, and strengthening innovation in Hawaii’s public schools.
Hawaii Innovation Fund Grants will provide public and charter schools with awards between $10,000 and $250,000 over an initial two-year period to pilot highly innovative programs that meet the following criteria:
- Target the root cause of a challenging and complex problem by using breakthrough approaches to education;
- Disrupt existing structures and systems;
- Have the potential to permanently transform education;
- Implement creative practices and new methods of operation; and
- Are strongly aligned with one or more of the Innovation Fund priority areas of school design, student voice and teacher collaboration.

The holidays are a great time to connect with friends and family. They are also a great time to connect teachers and students to the global community. If you're an NEA member and a K-12 educator - or you know someone who is - we wanted to be sure you knew about the NEA Foundation Global Learning Fellowship.
The NEA Foundation Global Learning Fellowship is a fully-funded professional development program that helps educators prepare themselves and their students for global citizenship. Over the course of 12 months, a cohort of educators come together through a blend of online, peer, and field-based learning opportunities. Fellows learn from experts about how to teach with a global perspective, but, perhaps most importantly, they also learn from each other about what works best to connect their students to the world beyond their classroom. And they share what they learn with educators around the country and the world by posting free, adaptable, globally focused lessons online.

HSTA sponsors ELL professional development workshop Jan. 11
HSTA members will host a free ELL professional development workshop run by Central Chapter English Language Learner teachers. This professional development opportunity will be on Thursday, Jan. 11, from 3:30 – 5:30 p.m. at HSTA's Red Hill headquarters on Oahu. Members will learn how to better support the ELLs in their classroom and school. Topics include:
- US Department of Education-Language Instruction Educational Programs (LIEP)
- SLA (Second Language Acquisition) strategies
- ELD (English Language Development) materials
- Staffing
- Other federal guidelines.
There will also be time for questions and answers. Please register for the Jan. 11 HSTA ELL training by Jan. 9.
Parking is at HSTA and overflow parking is at Red Hill Elementary School. Light refreshments will be provided.

Peace circles, rooted in indigenous practices, engage in relationship building and shared power as a means to transform school and community culture. Bay Watershed Education and Training Hawaii Program
The B-WET Hawaii Program is an environmental education program that promotes locally relevant, experiential learning primarily for grades K-12 on priority topics, such as understanding climate change, earth sciences, and community resilience to hazards. The B-WET Hawai'i competitive grants are awarded annually to fund projects that provide meaningful watershed educational experiences for students, related professional development for teachers and service learning opportunities for students that support regional education and environmental priorities.
NOAA is now seeking proposals for the B-WET Hawaii Program. The full FY18 Federal Funding Opportunity (FFO) is posted at Grants.gov under funding opportunity number NOAA-NOS-OCM-2018- 2005344. Full proposals must be submitted in Grants.gov by 6:59.p.m. Hawaii Time on February 1, 2018.
Eligible funding applicants are K-12 public and independent schools and school systems, institutions of higher education, commercial and nonprofit organizations, state or local government agencies, and Indian tribal governments conducting projects in Hawaii (Islands of Hawaii, Maui, Lanai, Molokai, Oahu, Kauai, Kahoolawe, Niihau, and/or the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands).
