Posted 8-3-2018 (Dated 7-31-2018) 3 of 12 Welcome back! Message from HSTA President

Aloha Colleague,

Welcome back to school!  On behalf of the Hawaii State Teachers Association, I want to thank all of you for the work you do to educate the keiki of Hawaii.

I’d also like to welcome our new educators to the profession, and please know that your union and its members are here to help you.

Because of our collective work to push for a strong contract, you will see significant increases in pay this year. Effective the first day of the second quarter, you will receive a three-and-a-half percent (3.5%) across-the-board pay raise. That pay increase will show up starting with your Nov. 5 paycheck. In all, there are various raises worth nearly 14 percent over the four years of the contract, which expires in 2021.

Also this is a great time to move up in pay by reclassifying. Last year was the fifth year of the negotiated 21 hours and 3 credits. Even if you haven’t taken any additional professional development credits, as long as you have been teaching more than five years, and are not already Class 7, you can still move up in class and give yourself a raise. Go to PDE3 to learn how.

As you’ve noticed from all the political ads on the radio and TV as well as the brochures in your mailboxes, we are just a few days away from the Primary Election on Saturday, Aug. 11I’d like to encourage you to volunteer some of your time over the next week or so for the candidates that the HSTA recommends because of their support for teachers, students and public schools.

Governor David Ige is in a very close race, and he really needs our help to ensure his surging campaign wins the primary.

We have made significant improvements for our members because of our unity together to give our keiki the schools they deserve. There is still a lot of work to be done, but together we can achieve great change.

Have a great school year and remember HSTA is here to support you. If you need help or have questions, please call 833-2711.

Mahalo,

Corey Rosenlee
