Aloha Colleagues,

HSTA is excited to share that, tomorrow, we will publicly announce an ambitious omnibus bill called, “The Schools Our Keiki Deserve,” based on members' ten shared values. (
Click Here to read more.) This bill incorporates the best models and research of what is needed to best educate our keiki:

  • Increasing teacher pay
  • Improving facilities(including air conditioning)
  • Teaching to the whole child and not to the test by bringing back arts education and increasing opportunities for all students to learn, including through education.
  • Reducing work load by lowering class size and the burden on our special education and ELL teachers.
  • Increasing funding for our small and rural schools
  • Public preschools
In order to achieve our goals we must increase funding for our public schools. The best way to fund "The Schools Our Keiki Deserve" is through a  “Penny for Education” effort which calls for a 1% increase in the Hawaii State General Excise Tax (GET).  (Click here to read: FAQ Why the GET?)

Every year, Hawaii says education is a priority, yet we continue to do nothing about it. It is time to make education a priority again.  All of our keiki deserve a quality education.  Instead of turning our backs on the next generation, invest in our children, our economy, and Hawaii’s future.  And, it is the responsible thing to do.  As a union we can work to achieve this together.

On February, 5, 2016 from 3:30 - 6:00  p.m., HSTA will hold a rally at the State Capitol. HSTA is also organizing, so when this bill is heard, we can fill the hearing rooms at the Capitol, for legislators to hear teachers’ voices. Please mark your calendar and be on the lookout for additional information on ways you can help.

We can achieve this together. We can bring equality for all our students. We can give our keiki the schools they deserve.

Mahalo,
Corey Rosenlee
President

The vast majority of voters believe that Hawaii's public schools are underfunded, according to a recent statewide survey of likely 2016 voters sponsored by the Hawaii State Teachers Association.
