HSTA strongly supports Dr. Josh Green to become Hawaii’s next Lieutenant Governor. He is a highly skilled physician and experienced state senator who has spent most of his professional career caring for Hawaii families.
Public school roots; A strong record supporting public educationA product of a public education and valedictorian of his public high school, Josh sends his children, Maia and Sam, to public school. He has almost a dozen public school teachers in his Hawaii family including his brother-in-law, aunties and cousins, so he understands and strongly supports our public education system.
Watch HSTA's news conference from our Facebook live announcing our support for Josh. He will continue to fight for higher teacher salaries, smaller class sizes, tax credits for teachers’ classroom expenses, and debt free college. In fact, he supports public service programs in our country to forgive loans of all professionals, teachers, doctors, nurses and others. He is invested in the success of our public schools as he knows their value and respects and supports public school teachers. He knows we need to invest more in our public schools in our state and will work to ensure more funding is provided for them, and that an investment in our public schools is an investment in the future of Hawaii.
Josh's background as a physician and lawmaker has prepared him well for statewide officeAfter completing his medical training, Josh started his life’s work as a family physician and ER doctor in rural hospitals and clinics on the Big Island. From 2004 to 2008, Josh served in the Hawaii State House of Representatives. Since 2008 he has served in the State Senate, representing Kona and Ka'u, chairing the Senate Health Committee. He currently chairs the Senate Human Services Committee. Today, Josh continues to work as an emergency room doctor on weekends.
Josh supports teachers: Members of HSTA's Government Relations Committee from Oahu, Maui and Hawaii Island celebrated with Josh after the State Senate overwhelmingly approved putting HSTA's constitutional amendment on the ballot last month.
In the State Senate, Josh has worked tirelessly to pass legislation that strengthens and supports Hawaii families. He has strongly supported a constitutional amendment to create additional revenue to fund our public schools, universal healthcare for our keiki, guaranteed coverage of treatment for Hawaii’s autistic children, stronger protections for victims of sexual assault and new programs to reduce maternal mortality.
A humanitarian, he founded a community health center and homeless clinicJosh served in the National Health Corps Service in Ka’u (2000-2004), worked medical missions in Africa (Swaziland), addressing malaria crisis and AIDS epidemic and founded the West Hawaii Community Health Center and the Chinatown homeless clinic. He is a true humanitarian.
The hopes, challenges and values of the families he cares for every day inspire him to do more to make life better for the people of Hawaii.
He believes Hawaii should be a place where no family has to live in poverty, or has to choose between buying food or buying medicine for a sick child. He knows that supporting strong, high-quality public schools is vital and benefits everyone.
