Aloha Colleagues,

HSTA is excited to share that, tomorrow, we will publicly announce an ambitious omnibus bill called, “The Schools Our Keiki Deserve,” based on members' ten shared values. (
Click Here to read more.) This bill incorporates the best models and research of what is needed to best educate our keiki:

  • Increasing teacher pay
  • Improving facilities(including air conditioning)
  • Teaching to the whole child and not to the test by bringing back arts education and increasing opportunities for all students to learn, including through education.
  • Reducing work load by lowering class size and the burden on our special education and ELL teachers.
  • Increasing funding for our small and rural schools
  • Public preschools
In order to achieve our goals we must increase funding for our public schools. The best way to fund "The Schools Our Keiki Deserve" is through a  “Penny for Education” effort which calls for a 1% increase in the Hawaii State General Excise Tax (GET).  (Click here to read: FAQ Why the GET?)

Every year, Hawaii says education is a priority, yet we continue to do nothing about it. It is time to make education a priority again.  All of our keiki deserve a quality education.  Instead of turning our backs on the next generation, invest in our children, our economy, and Hawaii’s future.  And, it is the responsible thing to do.  As a union we can work to achieve this together.

On February, 5, 2016 from 3:30 - 6:00  p.m., HSTA will hold a rally at the State Capitol. HSTA is also organizing, so when this bill is heard, we can fill the hearing rooms at the Capitol, for legislators to hear teachers’ voices. Please mark your calendar and be on the lookout for additional information on ways you can help.

We can achieve this together. We can bring equality for all our students. We can give our keiki the schools they deserve.

Mahalo,
Corey Rosenlee
President

NCLB End of an Era: Your collective efforts made a difference

"Every child, regardless of race, income, background, or zip code...deserves the chance to make of their lives what they will."
~ President Obama at today's ESSA signing ceremony

Aloha Colleagues,
I am excited to announce that a few hours ago President Obama signed the Every Child Succeeds Act. This law returns the authority over many of the failed policies of No Child Left Behind to the states.

With this new law:

A. The federal government has no role whatsoever in teacher evaluations.

B. States would no longer  be required to tie teacher evaluations to student outcomes.

C. Up to 7 states would be allowed to create their own local tests, and at the high school level states could choose nationally recognized tests(SAT, ACT) instead of having to use the SBA.

D. States must have challenging academic standards, but there would be no punishment for choosing or not choosing to use common core.

I want to thank all of our members who contacted Hawaii's congressional delegation to express support for the Every Child Succeeds Act. And I hope you will join me in expressing thanks to Hawaii's members of Congress for their efforts on our behalf.(Send a message
HERE>>>)

The passage of this new law gives our union great opportunity to move away from the “test and punish” culture and the scapegoating of teachers. Still, there is a lot of work to be done. Even though the law gives states the power to make these changes, we as a union must take action to ensure these changes occur in Hawaii. On Tuesday, (December 9) we announced the “Schools Our Keiki Deserve” initiative which includes language to move away from high stakes testing and, instead, teaches to the whole child. We will be holding a rally at the state capitol on February 5, 2016  from 3:30 - 6:00  p.m. in order to urge the Legislature to pass this bill. Also, our current contract expires on June 30, 2017. And with the passing of this bill, the BOE will no longer be forced to use EES. We have a lot of work ahead of us, but I am excited that with this new law, we can truly give our students the schools they deserve.

Sincerely,
Corey Rosenlee
HSTA President

Aloha Colleagues,

Your union does better when you play a part.Participate, engage and rally the teachers
in your building.“It takes a village,” but if you don’t step off the sidelines, you are a spectator with no say.
Thanks to the members who responded to the legislative priorities survey and those who came out to the statewide listening tour, we have a clear message on what is happening in your classrooms and teachers’ shared values of what they want for their students.
During the listening tour, we asked you three questions:
1. What is your vision for public education?
2. What are the most important roadblocks to realizing that vision?
3. How can we overcome those challenges together?
The following is what we learned from you about The Schools Our Keiki Deserve

House votes overwhelming for new ESEA, Senate expected to vote Tuesday!
Mahalo for your calls, emails, and Tweets.  Educators spoke and Congress listened!  This week, the House overwhelmingly passed the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) by a vote of 359-64

The vote is a historic step to usher in a new era in public education that will ensure every child has equal opportunity to a high-quality education, regardless of ZIP code.

For the first time since No Child Left Behind was enacted nearly 14 years ago, ESSA empowers educators as trusted professionals to make school and classroom decisions while keeping the focus on the students most in need.

The Senate is expected to vote by Tuesday and the White House has indicated President Obama will swiftly sign it into law. Help bring the bill across that final finish line of one more vote by urging our senators to vote yes on ESSA (S. 1177).  CLICK HERE>>>
According to the Fall 2015 ERS publication Holomua (page 3), all active members, inactive vested members and retirees are eligible to vote for this trustee position. You should have received a voting packet consisting of a ballot, candidate information sheets and a return envelope. Voted ballots must be received by KMH LLP at 1003 Bishop Street, Suite 2400, Honolulu, HI 96813 andpostmarked by October 21, 2015 to be considered valid. Pacing Guide issue at WIS remains unresolved; R. Yamanaka to visit lunchtime on Mon. Dec. 2, E-102

Wednesday, December 2, 2015

Hello WIS Colleagues,

As many teachers are aware, the issue of PACING GUIDES has been an ongoing concern since last school year.  As of right now, despite the most recent APC meeting with admin, some of these issues remain unresolved.

In light of this situation, Rae Yamanaka, our HSTA Hilo UniServ Director, will visit our campus on MONDAY, DECEMBER 7, 2015 in Room E-102 during LUNCH time, from 12:05 pm.

The goal of the meeting is to provide information and answer questions re: Pacing Guides and our contract.

PLEASE ATTEND THIS MEETING, ESPECIALLY THOSE WHO have questions and/or concerns re: the Pacing Guide.

Per her email, Rae has asked that teachers provide her with a "copy of the pacing guides that they are required to have" because she "would like those copies for my files and for evidence if we are going to eventually file a grievance."

If you need assistance with providing this hard copy, then let Joy Grabar know and I can assist.

Sincerely,
Joy Grabar
