WHAT IS RISK TOLERANCE?
In the investing arena, risk and reward go hand in hand.  The conservative investor, the one with the lower risk tolerance, takes little to no risk, and therefore expects a lower return.  The aggressive investor, with the higher risk tolerance, takes a greater risk, and hopes for a greater return over the long-term.  What goes into your risk tolerance?  Firstly, some people are more naturally aggressive or conservative.  The aggressive investor can stomach the stock market drops without losing sleep.  The more conservative investor starts to feel anxiety as the market drops.  The second factor in risk tolerance is your time horizon.  The teacher who is just starting out, can afford to be more aggressive, because they have longer to invest.  If you are getting closer to retirement, you should be scaling back your portfolio to be less aggressive.  One caveat here though, don’t get too conservative just because you’re retiring.  Your time horizon doesn’t end at retirement.  What is your risk tolerance?  Does your portfolio match your risk tolerance?  Your NEA Retirement Specialists have tools to measure your risk tolerance and analyze your portfolio to make sure it matches.  The DOE 403b has 5 NEA endorsed options that can match every risk tolerance from the conservative to the aggressive.  If you would like to measure your risk tolerance or have your portfolio reviewed by an NEA Retirement Specialist, please contact us at (808) 951-7185 or click NEA Retirement Program for more information.
