TALKING POINTS
Much of the information shared is from the Schools Our Keiki
Deserve Powerpoint.
1. Hawaii is last in the nation in the percent of
state and local expenditures for public education per capita. (Hawaii
Superintentendent’s Report, pg. 8)
2. Hawaii is 51st in the nation with
regards to capital improvement money per student per year, L’Heureux said. He
said, “Hawaii spend on average about $300 per pupil whereas the mainland
averages $1,200 to $1,500.” Civil Beat 10/24/12
3. Hawaii teacher pay last in the nation, when
figuring in cost of living.
4.1200 new teachers hired last year; almost of all
new teachers were emergency hires.
5.“It’s frustrating,” said Lindsay Ball,
Superintendent of the Hana-Lahainaluna-Lanai-Molokai Complex Area. “Our
principals are working very hard to fill vacancies and positions … but what can
you say when you don’t have anyone and you are just hopeful you have enough
substitutes?”
6. ~250 Special Education Positions are unfilled.
Assistant Superintendent Suzanne Mulcahy, PBS Insights
