Ige wants to increase education spending

Governor David Ige unveiled his latest budget proposal Monday, announcing a package that includes spending increases for education.
The governor’s proposed budget calls for more than $24 million in “strategic investments” in the Department of Education. The add-ons would increase the department’s general-fund budget by less than 1 percent to $1.99 billion for next year.
The governor wants to boost per-pupil funding for public schools by $2 million through what’s known as the weighted student formula. The Board of Education had wanted a $10 million increase to the per-pupil funding method, which assigns “weights” to various student characteristics to help ensure funds go to schools with the greatest needs.

Read details about the governor's budget proposals for public schools, libraries and the UH system.

Earlier this month, members of HSTA's Speakers Bureau spoke before the Board of Education about the need to improve career and technical education (CTE) in Hawaii's public schools. As a result, CivilBeat wrote this story quoting several HSTA members.

The holidays are a great time to connect with friends and family. They are also a great time to connect teachers and students to the global community. If you're an NEA member and a K-12 educator - or you know someone who is - we wanted to be sure you knew about the NEA Foundation Global Learning Fellowship.

The NEA Foundation Global Learning Fellowship is a fully-funded professional development program that helps educators prepare themselves and their students for global citizenship. Over the course of 12 months, a cohort of educators come together through a blend of online, peer, and field-based learning opportunities. Fellows learn from experts about how to teach with a global perspective, but, perhaps most importantly, they also learn from each other about what works best to connect their students to the world beyond their classroom. And they share what they learn with educators around the country and the world by posting free, adaptable, globally focused lessons online.

Watch the video below to find out more:
If this sounds like the opportunity that you have been waiting for, we hope you'll take some time over the winter break to apply! Early applications are encouraged and the deadline to apply is February 5, 2018.

Posted 12-17-2017, Support Debbie Anderson HSTA Board of Directors 2018-2020

To: WIS Colleagues
From: Debbie Anderson
Re: Candidate for HSTA Board of Directors 2018-2020

Aloha, all,
Asking if you're willing to spread the word: Have turned in my official nomination for Hilo Chapter's Board of Director 2018-2021 position, am now announcing my candidacy. HSTA Board of Directors (BOD) are stewards of a tax exempt organization's financial and other resources and it is their fiduciary responsibility to ensure that these resources are utilized in a reasonable, appropriate and legally accountable manner. As a matter of law, HSTA Directors, individually, have these fundamental Duties of Loyalty, Obedience, Candor and Care (LOCC), which I have and would uphold:

A. Loyalty to consider and act in good faith to advance HSTA's interests. Thus, the Board and its members must not authorize or engage in transactions except those in which the best possible outcomes or terms for HSTA can be achieved. The Director's duty is to the organization as a whole and not only to his or her local constituents.

B. Obedience to comply with applicable laws, rules and regulations, as well as honoring the terms and conditions of HSTA's tax exempt mission, bylaws, policies and other standards of appropriate behavior.

C. Candor to make candid disclosures of all relevant facts to affected parties and to be able to defend the decision-making process when controversial issues arise.

D. Care to act in the best interests of HSTA and to take the care and exercise the judgment that any reasonable and prudent person would exercise in the process of making informed decisions. The law recognizes that the Board members may not always be correct in their choices and decisions, but it holds them accountable for being attentive, diligent and thoughtful in considering and acting on a policy, course of action or making other decisions.

As our unions prepare for potential Supreme Court action, electing an experienced voice for education matters. Vote Debbie Anderson in 2018 for HSTA Hilo Chapter BOD.

Sincerely,
Debbie Anderson
